Cam Belt & Wet Belt Replacement
Your vehicle’s cam belt is a vital part of the engine. Also commonly known as a timing belt or cambelt, it keeps the engine’s internal components working together at precisely the right time. If the belt becomes worn or fails, it can cause serious and potentially expensive engine damage.
Castle Vehicle Servicing provides professional cam belt and wet belt replacement from our Northampton workshop, helping customers across Northampton and the surrounding Northamptonshire area. Whether you drive a Ford, Volkswagen, BMW, Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroën, Renault, Fiat, or another make, we can check your vehicle’s requirements and advise you when the belt needs replacing.
Cam Belt Replacement
A cam belt, also known as a timing belt, synchronises the engine’s crankshaft and camshaft. This allows the engine’s valves to open and close at the correct time as the engine runs.
Like other components in your vehicle, timing belts deteriorate with age and use. The recommended replacement interval varies depending on the vehicle and engine, so it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s servicing requirements.
If your vehicle is due a cam belt replacement, having the work carried out at the correct interval can help reduce the risk of unexpected belt failure and potentially serious engine damage.
Wet Belt Replacement
Some modern engines deploy a wet belt rather than a conventional timing belt. A wet belt performs the same essential timing function but operates inside the engine and is lubricated by engine oil. Certain Ford EcoBoost engines, for example, use wet belt technology.
Wet belt systems require the correct maintenance and engine oil specification, and on some engines the wet belt replacement interval can be shorter than you might expect. This makes it particularly important to check the manufacturer’s recommended replacement schedule rather than assuming the belt will last for the same mileage as a conventional timing belt.
As the rubber belt deteriorates, small particles of rubber can break away and enter the engine oil. Over time, this debris can clog the oil pickup, strainer and other parts of the engine’s lubrication system, restricting the flow of oil to where it is needed.
If the problem is not identified and the wet belt is not replaced in good time, reduced oil circulation can lead to oil starvation and serious engine damage, potentially affecting components such as the turbocharger, bearings and other internal engine parts.

Signs Your Cam Belt or Wet Belt May Need Replacing
A cam belt or wet belt can deteriorate with age and mileage, and in some cases there may be little or no warning before the belt fails. This is why following the manufacturer’s recommended replacement interval is so important.
However, there are some signs that could indicate a problem with the timing belt system, including:
- Unusual rattling, ticking, or knocking noises from the engine
- Difficulty starting the vehicle
- Engine misfiring or running roughly
- Loss of engine performance
- Poor or uneven engine running
- Unusual noises from the timing belt area
- Oil contamination or leaks
- Warning lights on the dashboard
- Visible signs of belt deterioration, where the belt can be inspected
With wet belts in particular, deterioration of the rubber belt can result in debris entering the engine oil and potentially restricting the oil pickup or lubrication system. If this happens, it can lead to reduced oil circulation and potentially serious engine damage.
It’s important not to wait for symptoms before replacing a belt. If your vehicle has reached the manufacturer’s recommended age or mileage interval, or you don’t know when the belt was last replaced, it’s worth getting it checked.

Cam Belt and Wet Belt FAQS
We regularly perform cam belt and wet belt replacement on a wide range of makes and models. Different manufacturers and engines use different timing systems and have their own replacement intervals, so we recommend checking the requirements for your specific vehicle.
We work on a wide range of cars and vans and can advise you on the correct belt, replacement interval, and associated components required for your vehicle.
The replacement interval depends on your vehicle’s make, model, engine, age and mileage. Some manufacturers specify a mileage interval, while others also specify an age limit.
A cam belt or wet belt may not always show obvious signs that it is approaching the end of its service life, so we don’t recommend waiting for symptoms before arranging a replacement.
If you’re unsure when your belt was last replaced, or you’ve recently bought a used vehicle without a clear service history, contact us with your vehicle registration and mileage, and we can help establish when it is due.
Wet belt systems are used on a number of modern engines from different manufacturers, including selected Ford, Peugeot, Citroën, Vauxhall, DS and Opel models, as well as some Volkswagen Group applications. However, not every vehicle from these manufacturers uses a wet belt, and the timing system can vary between engines and model years.
If you’re unsure whether your car has a wet belt, don’t rely on the make and model alone. We can check the vehicle’s registration and mileage and advise whether it has a wet belt, conventional cam belt or another timing system, along with the relevant replacement interval.
The time required for a cam belt or wet belt replacement depends on the vehicle, engine and the work involved. Some belt replacements can be completed within a day, while more involved jobs may take longer, particularly where the water pump, tensioners, seals or other related components are being replaced at the same time.
Wet belt replacement can also involve additional work because the belt runs inside the engine in oil and the lubrication system may need to be inspected and cleaned if the belt has started to deteriorate.
When you contact Castle Vehicle Servicing, we can check your vehicle using the registration and mileage and give you a clearer idea of how long the job is likely to take.
