Skipping Your Car Service? Why Northamptonshire Drivers Shouldn’t Ignore Routine Maintenance

Is your vehicle overdue a service? With more drivers putting off routine maintenance and garages seeing an increase in vehicles arriving with more serious mechanical faults, now is the time to give your car the attention it needs, especially heading towards Winter.

At Castle Vehicle Servicing, we’ve noticed a worrying trend. Routine servicing appointments simply aren’t coming through as they should, while we’re seeing more vehicles arrive with larger mechanical problems and faults that, in many cases, could potentially have been identified and addressed earlier through routine maintenance.

We wanted to understand whether this was just something happening in our workshop in Northampton or part of a wider UK trend. After looking into the latest industry reports, the figures seem to suggest it is a much bigger issue not just for drivers across Northamptonshire.

The UK car servicing trend: What do the statistics tell us?

The figures from across the UK automotive industry make for concerning reading.

According to research reported by AM Online,

one in four UK drivers is skipping their annual car service because of financial pressures.

Research covered by Swansway Garages also highlights how some motorists put servicing off purely because they mistakenly thought their car “was running fine”

Other findings reveal the wider consequences of delaying routine maintenance:

79% of garages report customers delaying timing belt replacements, while 72% report customers skipping routine oil and filter changes

MOTester.

39% of UK drivers experienced unexpected vehicle downtime lasting a day or more due to unplanned repairs over a 12-month period

According to RAC’s research.

10% of motorists reportedly have no up-to-date service record.

According to research reported by Aftermarket Online.

These stats seem to reflect what we’re increasingly seeing in the workshop. When routine maintenance is delayed, small issues can go unnoticed until they become more serious, more disruptive, and potentially much more expensive to fix problems.

Of course, not every mechanical failure can be prevented. But keeping up with servicing gives your mechanic a valuable opportunity to spot developing problems before they become larger concerns.

Your MOT is NOT your service

This is one of the most important things we want local drivers to understand.

An MOT test is not a substitute for a routine car service.

An MOT checks whether your vehicle meets the required roadworthiness and environmental standards at the time of the test. A service, on the other hand, focuses on routine maintenance intended to keep your vehicle running properly and help identify developing faults.

Passing your MOT doesn’t automatically mean your car is mechanically healthy, that your engine oil is in good condition, or that all your routine maintenance is up to date. For example, your car could pass its MOT but still need an oil and filter change, have maintenance due on its timing belt, or develop an issue that requires further investigation.

Think of it this way: your MOT checks your car’s roadworthiness; your service helps you look after its ongoing health.

Both are important, and neither should be treated as a replacement for the other.

What Could Skipping a Car Service Mean for Your Vehicle?

We understand that household budgets are under pressure. With the cost of everyday essentials rising in the current economic climate, it’s understandable that some drivers delay spending money on their vehicles. But delaying maintenance doesn’t necessarily save money in the long run

Putting off a car service might seem like an easy way to save money in the short term but routine servicing is about more than simply ticking a box in your maintenance history. It helps keep your vehicle running efficiently, identifies wear and tear. When essential maintenance is overlooked, relatively minor issues can develop into expensive repairs, unexpected breakdowns and, in some cases, safety concerns.

Missing an Oil Change Can Cost You More

Engine oil plays a vital role in protecting your engine. It lubricates moving components, reduces friction, helps manage heat, and minimises wear. Over time, engine oil deteriorates and becomes contaminated. If oil and filter changes are neglected, your engine may not receive the protection it needs, increasing the risk of excessive wear and potentially serious mechanical damage.

Depending on the vehicle and the extent of the damage, prolonged neglect can result in repair bills running into thousands of pounds. By comparison, a routine oil and filter change is generally a much smaller maintenance expense.

It’s also worth remembering that a vehicle can appear to run perfectly well even when its oil is overdue for replacement. You might not notice an immediate difference in how it drives, but that doesn’t mean the engine is receiving the protection it needs.

Can’t remember when your oil was last changed? Bought a used car without a clear service history? Speak to Castle Vehicle Servicing about checking your maintenance requirements.

Timing Belts: A Small Maintenance Job with Potentially Huge Consequences

Your timing belt plays a critical role in keeping important engine components working in sync. If it fails, the consequences can be severe. Depending on the engine, a broken timing belt can cause extensive internal damage and lead to a major repair bill.

One of the biggest risks is that a timing belt may show no obvious warning signs before it fails. Your car could seem to be running normally, even when the belt is approaching or has exceeded its recommended replacement interval.

That’s why it’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s guidance for your specific vehicle. Timing belt replacement intervals vary and may be based on mileage, age or both or whether you vehicle has a traditional cam belt or a wet belt. If your replacement is overdue, or you don’t know when the belt was last changed, don’t assume it’s fine simply because your car drives as expected.

Brakes, Tyres and Fluids: Don’t Leave Safety to Chance

Routine servicing isn’t just about protecting your engine. It’s also an opportunity to check important components that affect your vehicle’s safety, reliability and performance. Neglecting maintenance can mean worn or deteriorating components go unnoticed, potentially leaving you with problems when you least expect them. This is particularly concerning as we approach winter, when wet, cold and icy conditions can make driving more challenging.

Depending on your vehicle and the type of service booked, checks and maintenance may include:

  • Brakes: Identifying worn or damaged components and determining whether brake repairs or replacement are needed.
  • Tyres: Checking for damage, uneven wear and other signs that your tyres may need attention.
  • Engine oil and filters: Checking service requirements and replacing them at the appropriate intervals.
  • Fluids: Checking relevant fluid levels and condition, including coolant and brake fluid where appropriate.
  • Battery and charging system: Identifying signs of deterioration that could leave you struggling to start your car, particularly in colder weather.
  • Belts, hoses and other components: Looking for visible signs of wear, damage or deterioration.
  • Warning lights and developing faults: Investigating concerns and recommending further diagnostic checks where necessary.

Older vehicles need attention

The UK vehicle fleet is ageing, with industry reports putting the average age of cars on British roads at close to 10 years. Older vehicles aren’t automatically unreliable, and a well-maintained car can continue to serve you for years. However, as vehicles age, components naturally wear, can deteriorate, and maintenance history becomes increasingly important.

If you’re driving an older vehilce, particularly one with a patchy service record, regular maintenance can help you understand its condition and plan for upcoming work. This is especially important if you’ve bought a used vehicle and don’t know exactly when the oil, filters, timing belt, or other service items were last replaced.

The Message is simple – Choose preventive maintenance over reactive repair

At Castle Vehicle Servicing, our aim is to keep your running optimally, provide our expert guidance on what it needs, and help you avoid preventable problems. We’d much rather identify a developing issue during routine maintenance than see you arrive with a breakdown or a major repair that might have been avoided or reduced with earlier attention.

Whether your vehicle is due an annual service, needs an oil and filter change, requires brake replacement, a new wet belt, or you just need some honest advice, don’t wait until something goes wrong.
